In January 2019, a librarian sorting through early printed books at Bristol Central Library noticed something odd about a four-volume set of the works of the French theologian Jean Gerson, printed in the early sixteenth century. Wrapped around the printed pages of this particular set of books, doing nothing more glamorous than holding the books together, were leaves of much older parchment, covered in French verse in a hand that was clearly centuries older. By itself not immensely noteworthy, as the library, established in 1613, contains a vast array of early printed works. However, when specialists examined the fragments, they were astonished to discover that they were looking at pieces of the Suite Vulgate du Merlin — an Old French continuation of the Arthurian legend, telling the story of Merlin’s role in the birth of the Round Table. The parchment had been hidden in plain sight for five hundred years.
The “Bristol Merlin,” as it came to be known, is now one of the oldest surviving witnesses of the foundational legend — recovered not from a monastery library or a royal collection, but from the inside of a another book. And it is not an isolated case. It is one entry in a very long ledger of medieval manuscripts that were cut up, folded, pasted, and sewn into the printed books that displaced them. Understanding why that happened — and how scholars are now finding these fragments — tells a story about the book trade that is just as compelling as anything written on the parchment itself.

When the Manuscript Age Became Raw Material
Vellum and parchment were never cheap. Producing a single sheet required an animal skin, weeks of preparation, and skilled labor, and paper, while less costly, still represented a real investment in an age before mechanized production. So when a manuscript stopped being useful as a text, it wasn’t thrown away. It instead became raw material, perfect for a bookbinder who needed to reinforce a spine, line the inside of a cover, or pad out a board.
The supply of “obsolete” manuscripts increased dramatically just as the printing press was creating enormous new demand for binding material. A text that had once justified an expensive handwritten copy could now be had far more cheaply in print, which meant older manuscript copies quietly lost their value as texts. At the same time, the Reformation-era dissolution of monasteries across England and much of northern Europe released a flood of liturgical books, psalters, and scholastic manuscripts that had no further use in a reformed church and no market as reading material. Bookbinders, working fast and cheaply, had every incentive to reach for a pile of unwanted parchment rather than commission new material. A torn page, a missing quire, an outdated commentary — none of it mattered once the manuscript’s job was to hold a new book’s spine together rather than to be read.
The results are almost always hidden: strips of manuscript glued inside a spine, leaves pasted to the inside of a cover, scraps compressed into the boards themselves. Occasionally a whole book was wrapped in a manuscript leaf, visible on the outside — bindings made from recycled music manuscripts were common enough in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that they form their own minor genre. But in the overwhelming majority of cases, this material was meant to disappear, doing structural work no reader was ever meant to notice.
Fragmentology: A Field Built Out of Scraps
That, in essence, is the origin story of an entire modern discipline: fragmentology, the study of manuscript fragments that survive only because they were recycled into later bindings. It is a strange field by design, sitting at the intersection of palaeography, codicology, the history of the printed book, art history, and conservation science, because identifying a single scrap of hidden parchment can require expertise in half a dozen disciplines at once — someone has to recognize the script, place the text, date the printed book it’s hiding in, and figure out how it got there.
For centuries, fragmentology’s raw material turned up only by accident, usually during rebinding or conservation work, when a book was disassembled and a conservator suddenly found centuries-old handwriting staring back from the inside of a spine. That is how many of the twentieth century’s most celebrated finds surfaced. It’s also, unfortunately, how the field acquired a darker cousin: manuscript “breaking,” in which dealers deliberately dismembered complete medieval manuscripts to sell individual leaves to collectors. The most notorious practitioner, the American book dealer Otto Ege, broke apart dozens of manuscripts in the mid-twentieth century and sold their leaves in curated portfolios — a practice fragmentology scholars have spent decades working to undo, virtually reuniting Ege’s scattered leaves through shared databases and comparative analysis. It is a pointed reminder that the line between “recycling” and “destruction” has never been especially stable, and that manuscripts have been treated as disposable for very different reasons across five centuries.
What has changed fragmentology from a discipline of lucky accidents into an active research field is infrastructure. In 2017, the University of Fribourg in Switzerland launched Fragmentarium, a free digital platform where libraries from the British Library to the Bibliothèque nationale de France to the Vatican can upload images of fragments, cross-reference them against each other, and — in the best cases — digitally reunite leaves that have been scattered across different institutions for centuries. The project’s director, Christoph Flüeler, has estimated that as much as ninety percent of surviving fragment material is still sitting unidentified in library collections worldwide, which gives some sense of how much of this history is still waiting to be found. A dedicated peer-reviewed journal, Fragmentology, launched the following year to give the field a permanent scholarly home.

The Fragments Themselves
The discoveries that fragmentology has produced range from the moving to the genuinely irreplaceable.
At Princeton University Library, cataloguers going through a neglected box of old binding fragments found two paper leaves from a completely unrecorded 1482 astrological pamphlet, a Prognostication by the German writer Wenzel Faber von Budweis, printed in Augsburg. No other copy of that edition is known to survive anywhere — the fragments rescued from a bookbinding are, for now, the entire surviving record of that book’s existence. The same Princeton collection also yielded a bifolium from a 1465 edition of Boniface VIII’s Liber sextus, printed by Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer in Mainz, which had been repurposed as the vellum cover of a seventeenth-century German chronology — one of the earliest printed fragments known to have been reused this way.
Not every discovery is so purely bibliographic. In 1978, conservators at Hereford Cathedral Library opened up a 1608 book printed by Richard Field — Shakespeare’s fellow Stratford native and the printer of his early poems — and found a fragment of a handwritten letter addressed to a “Mrs Shakspaire” tucked inside the binding. It has never settled any major biographical question, but it is a reminder that binder’s waste wasn’t only scholarly or liturgical material; ordinary letters, accounts, and drafts ended up in bindings too, alongside grander texts.
At the Newberry Library in Chicago, conservators working on a 1621 devotional text found medieval sermon material attributed to Saint Augustine hidden inside its binding — significant enough that it was eventually separated from the printed book entirely and catalogued as an independent manuscript item, its second life as scrap paper finally over.
Reading Without Opening
The newest chapter of this story doesn’t involve rebinding a book at all. In 2017, researchers at Leiden University and Delft University of Technology, led by book historian Erik Kwakkel and physicist Joris Dik, used a mobile macro-XRF scanner — a device that detects the iron and copper compounds in medieval ink — to read manuscript fragments hidden inside book spines without disassembling the bindings. Among their finds were pieces of a twelfth-century text by the historian Bede and fragments of a Dutch Book of Hours. Kwakkel has estimated that roughly one in five early printed European books may contain fragments like these, hidden in bindings that have never been opened since the day they were made — which would put the potential scale of undiscovered material in the hundreds of thousands of fragments, sitting on library shelves right now.
More recently, in early 2025, a team at Leiden University led by Thijs Porck took an even simpler approach, adapting an endoscopic camera originally built for inspecting gun barrels to peer directly into the spines of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books. The technique, nicknamed “FragmEndoscopy,” costs a fraction of an X-ray scan and takes minutes rather than hours. In its pilot run on books held at Leiden University Library and the Noord-Hollands Archief, it turned up fragments of a Middle Dutch Book of Hours from around 1400 and a piece of fourteenth-century music with its notation still legible — texts and melodies that had been sealed inside spines, unread, for four centuries.
None of this depends solely on scanning technology, either. Institutions including the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas have run crowdsourced cataloguing projects, asking volunteers and visiting scholars to help identify and describe fragments across thousands of bindings, while Yale’s law and rare book libraries have mounted exhibitions built entirely around what turned up in their own collections’ bindings. Fragmentology, in other words, isn’t a closed case study from decades past. It is an active, ongoing search, and new fragments are still surfacing from libraries that have owned them, unknowingly, for centuries.
What One Age Discards, Another Recovers
There is a neat irony sitting at the center of all this: the printing press is usually remembered as the technology that ended the manuscript era, and in most respects, it did. But the shift also meant that thousands of manuscripts, no longer valuable as texts, became valuable as material — and were folded, quite literally, into the printed books built to replace them. The Suite Vulgate du Merlin fragments in Bristol; the only surviving copy of a fifteenth-century Augsburg pamphlet in Princeton; a scrap of Bede’s history revealed by an X-ray scanner in Leiden — none of these were saved because anyone thought they mattered. They survived because someone, centuries ago, thought they were merely useful.
That is the quiet argument fragmentology keeps making, one binding at a time: value is not fixed. What one generation treats as scrap, the next may spend years and considerable ingenuity trying to read. The books on any collector’s or librarian’s shelf that look most ordinary — the plain, workaday printed volumes nobody would think to X-ray — are exactly the ones most likely to be holding something unexpected in their spines.
